Grand Theory Comparisons of Florence Nightingale and Jean Watson

Grand Theory offers its usefulness in complex and abstract concepts of nursing practice (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Two well known grand theorist are Florence Nightingale and Jean Watson, which both contribute a vast amount of nursing theory that has been applied to nursing practice, research, education, and administration. The two theorists are similar in their concepts of health promotion, assistance in basic human needs, and creating an optimum healthy environment. However, the two theorist view differ in such Watson addresses in patient strong interpersonal faith for healing and openness of patient emotions when facing stressors, while Nightingale was the first theorist to use observation and statistic support regarding patient outcomes (McEwen & Wills, 2019). I will present two different studies that use both grand theorist framework to then evaluate the usefulness in modern nursing practice.

Awlkhan & Muhammad (2016) study used the application of Nightingale’s theory to address patient experience with a new colostomy. Patient Mrs. X was experiencing deficits in education on her new colostomy, unsafe well water, limited social services, and disrupted sleep cycles (Awlkhan & Muhammad, 2016). As a result it led to skin break down on the stoma site and potentially more medical complications.
